Spaghetti Squash is a fun and versatile winter squash variety known for its pale yellow flesh that transforms into tender, noodle-like strands when baked. Simply rake the cooked flesh with a fork, and enjoy as a gluten-free, low-carb substitute for pasta. These productive plants yield oblong fruits with hard shells that store well into the winter, allowing you to enjoy nutritious meals long after the harvest season. Ideal for roasting, baking, or steaming, it’s a family favourite for both its novelty and flavour.

Where Can You Grow Spaghetti Squash?
Well-suited to Zones 3–9, Spaghetti Squash grows best in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Give it space to sprawl or grow vertically using a strong trellis to support the heavy fruits.

History and Historical Uses
Originally introduced to North America in the early 20th century, Spaghetti Squash quickly became a popular alternative to traditional pasta. Its ability to store well and provide a healthy, easy-to-prepare food source has made it a kitchen staple in homes and gardens around the world.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow outdoors in May; harvest in September.
Zones 5-7: Start indoors in early May and transplant after last frost.
Zones 3-4: Start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost; transplant into a warm, sunny location.

How to Grow and Harvest Spaghetti Squash
Planting: Sow seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep, spaced 1.2–1.5m (4–5ft) apart.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially while fruiting.
Harvesting: Harvest when fruits are hard-shelled and have turned a uniform yellow; cut from vine with stem intact.
Maintenance: Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds; ensure plants have ample space.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Select Mature Squash: Allow fruit to fully mature on the vine before harvesting.
Harvest Seeds: Scoop out seeds, rinse to remove pulp, and dry thoroughly.
Dry and Store: Lay seeds out in a single layer to dry completely.
Store: Keep seeds cool and dry in an airtight container; viable for up to 6 years.
