Oregon Gumweed is a tough and resilient native perennial that produces striking sunflower-yellow blooms from mid-summer well into the fall. Adapted to arid environments, it grows easily in gravelly or nutrient-poor soil, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping, restoration projects, and wildflower gardens. Its deep root system and natural resistance to drought make it an ideal low-maintenance addition to dryland landscapes. The plant’s sticky flower buds, which give gumweed its name, are a characteristic feature that also serve as a food and habitat source for pollinators.

Where Can You Grow Oregon Gumweed?
Best suited for Zones 5–9, Oregon Gumweed thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It excels in rock gardens, dry meadows, roadside plantings, and areas with limited water.

History and Historical Uses
Traditionally used in Indigenous and Western herbal medicine, Oregon Gumweed (Grindelia spp.) has been valued for its resinous flower heads, which were used to treat respiratory ailments and skin conditions. Its cheerful blooms and ability to grow in harsh conditions have long made it a favourite in wildflower meadows and native plantings.

Canadian Zone Information
