Also known as snake melon, is a unique fruit with a mild, sweet cucumber flavour. Its tender skin eliminates the need for peeling, making it easy to prepare fresh in salads or as a crisp snack. The fruits range in colour from deep green to creamy pistachio, adding a visually striking element to your garden and kitchen.

Thriving on a trellis, Armenian Cucumber is a vigorous climber that makes excellent use of vertical space. Harvest fruits at 30-38cm (12-15in) for the best flavour and texture.

Where Can You Grow Armenian Cucumber

Armenian Cucumber grows well in Zones 4-9, preferring full sun and well-draining soil. It thrives when grown vertically on a trellis, keeping fruits straight and off the ground.

History and Historical Uses

Native to the Middle East, Armenian Cucumber has been cultivated for centuries for its refreshing flavour and adaptability to hot climates. Its unique appearance and culinary versatility make it a favourite in gardens and kitchens worldwide.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8-9: Direct sow seeds in late spring after the last frost.
  • Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in early spring and transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.
  • Zones 4: Mulch plants to retain warmth and extend the growing season.

How to Grow and Harvest Armenian Cucumber

  1. Planting: Sow seeds 1.5cm (0.5in) deep and 30cm (12in) apart in well-drained soil. Provide a trellis for vertical growth.
  2. Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  3. Harvesting: Pick fruits when they reach 30-38cm (12-15in) for optimal flavour and texture.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow Fruits to Mature: Leave a few fruits on the vine until they become large and fully ripen to a yellowish-brown colour.
  2. Extract the Seeds: Cut the ripe fruit open and scoop out the seeds along with the surrounding pulp.
  3. Fermentation: Place the seeds and pulp in a jar with a small amount of water and let ferment for 2-3 days, stirring daily. This helps remove the gel coating around the seeds.
  4. Rinse and Dry: Rinse the seeds thoroughly and spread them on a clean towel or screen to dry completely.
  5. Store: Store dried seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 5 years.
