Sugar Baby is a compact and early-yielding watermelon variety that produces small, round melons with intensely sweet red flesh and dark green rinds. These mini melons are perfect for small families or single servings and are a great fit for gardeners with limited space. Reliable and quick to mature, Sugar Baby performs well in our mild west-coast climate and is an excellent choice for warm garden spots, greenhouses, or sunny patios.

Where Can You Grow Sugar Baby Watermelon?
This variety is best suited to Zones 4–9. Choose a warm, sheltered location with full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Sugar Baby does especially well when grown on black mulch or heat-retentive surfaces in cooler zones.

History and Historical Uses
Introduced in the 1950s, Sugar Baby was bred for its early maturity and small size, ideal for home gardens and short growing seasons. It quickly became a favourite for its sweet taste, easy handling, and space-saving vines—making watermelon growing accessible to more northern gardeners.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8–9: Direct sow outdoors in late spring once soil has warmed.
Zones 5–7: Start indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost and transplant after danger of frost.
Zones 4: Grow in greenhouse or use row covers to increase soil warmth; transplant for best results.

How to Grow and Harvest Sugar Baby Watermelon
Planting: Sow seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep, spaced 60–90cm (2–3ft) apart in mounds or rows.
Watering: Water deeply and consistently, especially during flowering and fruit set.
Harvesting: Melons are ripe when the tendril nearest the fruit turns brown and the underside yellows.
Maintenance: Use mulch to conserve moisture and increase soil warmth; provide support or space for vines to spread.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Select Ripe Fruit: Allow fruit to fully ripen on the vine before harvesting seeds.
Extract Seeds: Scoop seeds, rinse thoroughly to remove pulp, and dry.
Dry and Store: Spread in a single layer to air dry completely.
Store: Store in a cool, dry place; viable for 4–6 years when stored well.
