Pickling Cucumber is a vigorous and reliable variety known for its exceptional productivity and versatility. The young, tender fruit are crisp and non-bitter, making them excellent for fresh eating. When harvested at mid-size, they are ideal for pickling, with firm texture and excellent flavour retention. And for the ones you miss? Mature fruit take on a pleasant lemon-tangy note and are delicious peeled and sliced. An easy and forgiving cucumber to grow, it’s a favourite among beginner and seasoned gardeners alike.

Where Can You Grow Pickling Cucumber?
Pickling Cucumber thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil in Zones 3–9. Best grown in a sunny garden bed or large container with plenty of space to sprawl or climb.

History and Historical Uses
Cucumbers have been cultivated for thousands of years across Asia and the Mediterranean, valued for both their hydrating properties and culinary flexibility. This particular variety was selected for northern climates where a shorter season and cooler nights demand fast and reliable production. Pickling cucumbers have been a staple in preserving traditions around the world, offering a way to extend summer abundance into the winter months.

How to Grow and Harvest Pickling Cucumber

Planting: Sow seeds 2cm (¾in) deep, spaced 30–45cm (12–18in) apart in rows or hills.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged; mulch to retain moisture.
Harvesting: Pick young cucumbers regularly to encourage continued production.
Maintenance: Provide a trellis if space is limited; regular harvesting prevents overgrowth.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Let Fruit Mature: Select a few cucumbers to fully ripen on the vine until yellow and soft.
Harvest Seeds: Scoop out seeds, ferment in water for 2–3 days to remove gel coating.
