A native annual plant known for its clinging, bristly stems that sprawl across the ground or climb over nearby plants. Often found in woodland edges and hedgerows, cleavers are a highly valued wild herb with a long history of traditional medicinal use. The entire plant is edible when young and tender, though best known for its lymphatic cleansing properties and use in teas or tinctures. Its ability to self-seed and naturalise makes it a resilient addition to any wild herb garden.

Where Can You Grow Cleaver?
This plant grows best in Zones 3–9 in moist, well-drained soils and partial shade. It thrives in woodland gardens, along fence lines, or in shady corners of cultivated plots.

History and Historical Uses
Cleavers have been used for centuries in traditional herbal medicine across Europe and North America. Historically known as a blood and lymph cleanser, the plant was made into teas, tinctures, and poultices. Its sticky seeds and burr-like nature also led to practical uses—reportedly as a natural sieve or even for trapping small game. The young shoots were once eaten as a spring green to aid seasonal detoxification.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8–9: Direct sow outdoors in early spring or late autumn for best results.
Zones 5–7: Sow in early spring or autumn; prefers cool, damp conditions to germinate.
Zones 3–4: Start in a cold frame or protected shaded area and allow to self-seed naturally.

How to Grow and Harvest Cleaver
Planting: Sow seeds directly 0.5cm (ÂŒin) deep in shaded, moist soil.
Watering: Maintain consistent moisture; do not allow to dry out in early growth stages.
Harvesting: Harvest before flowering for the best medicinal potency. Use fresh or dry for later use.
Maintenance: Minimal care required; allow plants to sprawl or climb; cut back after flowering to control spread.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Let Seeds Ripen: Allow sticky seed clusters to mature and dry on the plant.
Collect Carefully: Seeds cling to skin and fabric—gather by hand or by combing through plants.
Dry and Store: Air-dry thoroughly; store in breathable bags in a cool, dry place.
Viability: Seeds remain viable for up to 3 years if stored properly.
