All the Details You Need to Know

The Story Behind This Plant

Native to the subtropical coastal regions of South Africa, Bird of Paradise belongs to the genus Strelitzia. Its name comes from the crane-like flowers of Strelitzia reginae, which resemble the head of a tropical bird. Strelitzia nicolai, the Giant Bird of Paradise, can reach up to 10 feet indoors with banana-like leaves, while Strelitzia reginae typically stays a more manageable 3-6 feet. Natural leaf splitting is a common, healthy trait that helps the plant withstand high winds in the wild.

How to Keep It Happy
  • Light: Requires very bright light, including several hours of direct morning or late afternoon sun. A south or west-facing window is ideal.
  • Water: Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, and reduce watering in cooler winter months.
  • Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but tolerates average household levels. Increase humidity if leaf edges become crispy.
  • Soil: Use a rich, well-draining tropical mix, or a blend of potting soil, perlite, and bark.
