Arugula is a fast-growing leafy green that adds a peppery, nutty flavour to salads, sandwiches, and more. Known for its versatility, arugula can be harvested as tender baby greens or allowed to mature for heartier leaves with a stronger flavour.

Cold-hardy and easy to grow, arugula thrives in a variety of conditions and is perfect for gardeners looking for continuous harvests. Its quick maturity allows for successive plantings, ensuring fresh greens throughout the growing season.

Companion plants like radishes, lettuce, and carrots grow well alongside arugula, creating a balanced and productive garden bed.

Where Can You Grow Arugula

Arugula thrives in Zones 3-9, preferring well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade. It grows well in garden beds, raised beds, and containers, making it suitable for all gardening styles.

History and Historical Uses

A staple in Mediterranean cuisine for centuries, arugula has been prized for its bold flavour and health benefits. Traditionally used as both a culinary green and a medicinal herb, it has been celebrated for its rich nutrient content and ability to enhance digestion.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8-9: Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring or late autumn for cool-season growth.
  • Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in early spring or sow directly outdoors once the soil is workable. Successive sowings can extend the harvest.
  • Zones 3-4: Direct sow in spring after the last frost, with light mulching to retain soil warmth.

How to Grow and Harvest Arugula

  1. Planting: Sow seeds 0.5cm (1/4in) deep and 2.5cm (1in) apart in rows. Thin seedlings to 10-15cm (4-6in) apart for mature plants.
  2. Watering: Keep soil consistently moist for optimal growth.
  3. Harvesting: Begin harvesting baby greens 20-25 days after sowing or allow leaves to mature for a stronger flavour. Harvest regularly to encourage regrowth.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow to Bolt: Let plants flower and form seed pods as they mature.
  2. Harvest Seeds: Once the seed pods turn brown and dry, cut the stems and place them in a paper bag.
  3. Dry and Clean: Allow pods to dry for 1-2 weeks. Crush the pods to release the seeds, separating them from the chaff.
  4. Store: Store cleaned seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 4 years.
