A beloved heirloom pole bean known for its tall vines, sweet-tasting pods, and clusters of brilliant red flowers. Grown for both ornamental beauty and edible value, this variety produces a generous crop of large, juicy beans that are delicious when picked young. The vines are fast-growing and ideal for creating vertical interest in your garden while supporting pollinators like bees and hummingbirds. Under mild growing conditions, the plants can act as perennials, returning for multiple seasons.

Where Can You Grow Scarlet Runner Pole Bean?
This variety thrives in Zones 3–9, preferring full sun and moist, fertile soil. Scarlet Runner beans do especially well in vertical garden spaces, on trellises, fences, or arches.

History and Historical Uses
Originally native to the highlands of Central America, Scarlet Runner beans have been cultivated for centuries for both their edible pods and stunning flowers. They’ve gained popularity in cottage gardens across Europe and North America, and were often grown as much for their aesthetic appeal as for their food value. In many cultures, both the pods and mature beans are enjoyed fresh, dried, or shelled.
