Salal is a much-loved understory plant native to the Pacific Northwest, thriving in the cool, moist forests of British Columbia. This evergreen perennial produces glossy green leaves and clusters of small, bell-shaped pinkish-white flowers, followed by dark purple, blueberry-like fruit. The berries are sweet and slightly earthy, perfect for fresh eating or preserving. Salal also plays an important ecological role, offering food and shelter to birds, pollinators, and small mammals.

Where Can You Grow Salal?
Salal grows best in Zones 5–9 in acidic, well-drained soil with partial to full shade. Ideal for woodland gardens, under conifers, and naturalised coastal landscapes. Tolerates poor soil and dry summers once established.

History and Historical Uses
Used for centuries by Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest, salal berries were eaten fresh, dried into cakes, or mixed with other fruits. The leaves were also used medicinally. Today, salal remains popular both as a native food plant and for its long-lasting decorative foliage in floral arrangements.

Zones 8-9: Direct sow in autumn or early spring; thrives in shaded understory environments.
Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors with 4–8 weeks cold stratification before spring sowing.
Zone 4: May survive with protection but best grown in containers and overwintered in sheltered areas.

Planting: Sow seeds on soil surface; do not cover. Requires 4–8 weeks cold stratification before sowing.
Watering: Keep moist but not waterlogged; salal prefers consistent moisture.
Harvesting: Pick berries when fully purple and soft; prune stems for floral use.
Maintenance: Mulch with leaf litter; little fertiliser required in native soils.

Select Fruit: Choose fully ripe berries from healthy plants.
Harvest Seeds: Mash berries and rinse to separate seeds from pulp.
Dry and Store: Air dry seeds and store in paper packets in the fridge.
Stratify: Cold-stratify seeds for 4–8 weeks before sowing for best germination.
