Red Fife is a celebrated Canadian heritage wheat first grown in Ontario in the 1840s. Named for its distinctive red kernels, this tall and elegant grain adds visual interest to the garden while offering exceptional functionality for home growers. With a sweet, nutty flavour and high protein content, Red Fife has been a favourite of artisan bakers and millers for generations. Whether grown for harvest or beauty, its resilience and ease of threshing make it a fantastic choice for gardeners experimenting with home-scale grain production.

Where Can You Grow Red Fife Wheat?

This wheat is best grown in Zones 3–9. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, but is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions. Sow directly into the garden in early spring or late fall for overwintering in milder climates.

History and Historical Uses

Red Fife played a central role in shaping Canadian agriculture in the 19th century, becoming the standard wheat in Canada before being replaced by more modern commercial hybrids. Valued for its excellent baking quality, it remains a popular choice for heritage grain revivalists and small-scale farmers alike. Its return to favour in recent decades reflects a growing interest in traditional, flavour-rich grains.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Fall sowing is recommended for overwintering and early harvest.
Zones 5-7: Sow in early spring as soon as soil can be worked.
Zones 3-4: Spring sowing recommended; mulch to retain moisture and reduce weed competition.

How to Grow and Harvest Red Fife Wheat

Planting: Sow seeds 1-2cm deep in rows 15-20cm apart; thin if needed for airflow.
Watering: Moderate water needs; avoid overwatering once plants are established.
Harvesting: Harvest when stalks are golden and seed heads are firm; bundle and dry before threshing.
Maintenance: Keep weeded early on; mature stands are self-supporting but may benefit from staking in high winds.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Let Fully Mature: Leave seed heads to fully ripen and dry on the plant.
Thresh: Rub dried heads between hands or beat in a bag to release grain.
Clean and Store: Separate chaff from grain with a fan or sieve. Store dry seeds in a cool, dark place.
Storage Life: Properly stored, Red Fife wheat seeds remain viable for up to 5 years.
