Prairie Coreopsis is a cheerful and hardy native wildflower that lights up the garden with its sunny yellow blooms from early summer through to autumn. This drought-tolerant perennial thrives in full sun and a wide range of soils, making it ideal for naturalised areas, pollinator plantings, and low-maintenance gardens. Its long blooming season and easy care make it a favourite for both beginner and experienced gardeners. Loved by bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, it’s a great way to support biodiversity in your garden.

Where Can You Grow Prairie Coreopsis?
Well-suited for Zones 3-9, Prairie Coreopsis performs best in full sun and well-drained soil but is tolerant of poor, sandy, or rocky conditions. It’s ideal for xeriscaping, meadows, borders, and drought-prone sites.

History and Historical Uses
Native to the central plains of North America, Prairie Coreopsis has long been appreciated for its ability to thrive in challenging conditions. It has been used in wildflower meadows and prairie restorations to bring beauty and resilience to the landscape. Its abundant nectar also supports native bee and butterfly populations.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow in early spring or autumn for naturalised blooms the following year.
Zones 5-7: Start indoors in late winter or sow outdoors after the last frost.
Zones 3-4: Start indoors and transplant after last frost for best results.

How to Grow and Harvest Prairie Coreopsis

Planting: Sow seeds 3mm (1/8in) deep in early spring or autumn; space plants 20-30cm (8-12in) apart.
Watering: Water regularly until established; once mature, plants are drought tolerant.
Harvesting: Cut flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming.
Maintenance: Minimal care required; deadhead for extended bloom or allow to self-seed.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

Let Plants Mature: Allow seed heads to dry fully on the plant.
Collect Seeds: Harvest when heads turn brown; shake or rub to release seeds.
Clean and Dry: Remove debris and ensure seeds are thoroughly dry.
Store: Store in a cool, dry place; seeds remain viable for 3-5 years.
