Also known as Crocosmia, this bold and beautiful perennial belongs to the iris family and grows in upright clumps with long arching flower spikes. Each stem bursts into vibrant red-orange blossoms that attract hummingbirds and pollinators all summer long. Montbretia is a striking addition to perennial beds and ornamental landscapes and thrives in a wide range of growing conditions. It readily naturalises in the garden and is easily divided once established.

Where Can You Grow Montbretia?

Montbretia grows best in Zones 5-9, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. It performs well in both garden beds and containers, especially in sheltered sunny spots.

History and Historical Uses

Native to southern Africa, Montbretia was brought to Europe in the 19th century and became popular for its vivid colour, unique form, and adaptability. It has long been cultivated as a garden ornamental and is valued for its visual impact and long vase life as a cut flower.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Plant corms outdoors in spring; protect lightly with mulch in winter.
Zones 5-7: Plant in spring and lift/divide clumps every few years.
Zone 4 (not really): Not reliably hardy; lift and store corms indoors over winter.

How to Grow and Harvest Montbretia

Planting: Plant corms 5-8cm (2-3in) deep and 10-15cm (4-6in) apart.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment; drought tolerant once mature.
Harvesting: Cut stems just as lower flowers begin to open for fresh bouquets.
Maintenance: Deadhead to encourage continuous blooming; divide clumps in early spring or fall.

Allow to Flower and Seed: Let some flower stalks mature on the plant.
Harvest Seeds: When dry, collect seed pods and separate seeds.
