Large-Leaved Lupin is a vigorous perennial known for its tall floral spires and lush, hand-shaped foliage. With a range of flower colours including purple, pink, white and yellow, this stunning plant is a favourite for ornamental and pollinator gardens. A nitrogen fixer, it also improves soil fertility, making it a valuable companion plant. Once established, lupins are drought tolerant and low maintenance, providing lasting beauty year after year.

Where Can You Grow Large-Leaved Lupin?
Lupins grow best in Zones 3-9 in full sun or part shade, preferring well-drained, slightly acidic soils. Ideal for borders, cottage gardens, meadow plantings and pollinator patches.

History and Historical Uses
Lupins have been cultivated in Europe and the Americas for centuries as both ornamentals and soil builders. Their nitrogen-fixing roots enrich depleted soils, and their striking vertical blooms have made them favourites in traditional and modern gardens alike. Some species were even historically grown for their edible seeds, although ornamental varieties like this one are best appreciated for their beauty and ecosystem value.

Canadian Zone Information
Zones 8-9: Direct sow in autumn or early spring for summer blooms.
Zones 5-7: Sow in spring after frost or start indoors and transplant when soil warms.
Zones 3-4: Start indoors or sow in spring with cold stratification for best germination.

How to Grow and Harvest Large-Leaved Lupin
Planting: Sow seeds 1cm (½in) deep, 30-45cm (12-18in) apart; scarify or soak seeds before planting to improve germination.
Watering: Keep moist during germination; drought tolerant once established.
Harvesting: Cut flowers as they open for bouquets or deadhead to prolong blooming.
Maintenance: Leave seed pods to ripen if you want natural reseeding.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply
Select Pods: Allow some pods to fully mature and dry on the plant.
Harvest Seeds: Collect when pods are brown and dry, but before they split.
Dry and Store: Remove seeds and store in a dry, cool place in a paper envelope.
Viability: Seeds store well for 2-3 years when kept dry.
