This striking and rare native perennial iis cherished for its edible shoots, leaves, and seeds that provide an intense, aromatic celery flavour. The plant features distinctive bluish-green foliage and unusual yellow stems, making it visually appealing in any garden setting. Large, showy umbels form in summer, ideal for both fresh and dried flower arrangements. Hardy and drought-tolerant once established, this plant grows up to 70cm tall, adding ornamental value and attracting pollinators.

Indian Celery thrives in Zones 5-9, preferring full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Suitable for perennial borders, naturalised meadows, ornamental beds, or edible landscaping.

Indian Celery is native to western North America, traditionally valued by Indigenous communities for culinary and medicinal uses. Young shoots and leaves were used as food, while seeds provided aromatic seasoning. Today, it remains appreciated for culinary purposes, ornamental use, and its cultural heritage.

  • Planting: Sow seeds 6mm (¼in) deep; space plants 20-30cm (8-12in) apart.
  • Watering: Maintain regular moisture until established; drought-tolerant thereafter.
  • Harvesting: Harvest young leaves, shoots and mature seeds throughout the growing season.
  • Maintenance: Minimal care required; remove spent flower heads to encourage new growth or allow to mature for seed collection.

  • Allow Umbels to Mature: Leave some umbels on plants to fully ripen and dry.
  • Harvest Seeds: Cut mature seed heads and collect seeds carefully.
  • Clean and Dry: Separate seeds, ensuring they are completely dry before storing.
  • Store: Keep seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place; viable for up to 3 years.
