Hardhack

Hardhack, also known as steeplebush, is a beautiful deciduous native shrub commonly found in wetlands and moist meadows throughout coastal British Columbia. Reaching up to 1.5 metres tall, it produces upright spikes of densely packed pink to purple flowers in mid to late summer that are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its spreading root system makes it an excellent choice for stabilizing banks and restoring wetland ecosystems. The plant also offers seasonal interest, with vibrant new growth in spring and reddish foliage in autumn.

Where Can You Grow Hardhack?
Hardhack is ideal for Zones 4–9 and prefers consistently moist soils in full sun to part shade. It thrives in rain gardens, naturalised wet areas, streambanks, and low-lying garden beds.

History and Historical Uses
Used traditionally by Indigenous peoples for its astringent properties, Hardhack was applied in infusions and poultices for medicinal purposes. Its dense flower clusters have also made it a favourite for natural bouquets and dried floral arrangements. In ecological landscaping, it remains valued for attracting pollinators and preventing soil erosion.
