Dahlias are striking perennials known for their vibrant blooms and stunning range of colours and shapes. Each plant produces multiple flowers, making them a favourite for both garden displays and floral arrangements. With a long blooming season lasting from mid-summer to autumn, dahlias add consistent beauty to any outdoor space.

These plants are easy to grow and propagate, thriving in well-drained soil and full sun. Dahlia roots (tubers) are versatile, allowing gardeners to divide and replant them year after year. You can even eat the roots and petals.

Companion plants like marigolds, lavender, and zinnias pair beautifully with dahlias, helping deter pests and adding variety to the garden.

Where Can You Grow Dahlia Root Stock

Dahlias are well-suited for Zones 3-9 and thrive in sunny, sheltered locations with rich, well-draining soil. In colder zones, tubers should be lifted and stored over winter to protect them from frost.

History and Historical Uses

Native to Mexico and Central America, dahlias were cultivated by the Aztecs for their edible tubers and ornamental beauty. They were introduced to Europe in the 18th century, quickly gaining popularity as decorative garden plants. Today, dahlias are celebrated worldwide for their dazzling flowers and easy care.

Canadian Zone Information

  • Zones 8-9: Plant tubers directly in the garden after the last frost. Lift and store tubers before winter if frost occurs.
  • Zones 5-7: Start tubers indoors or plant directly outdoors in late spring after the danger of frost. Dig up and store in autumn for replanting the following spring.
  • Zones 3-4: Plant tubers in containers or raised beds. Overwinter indoors in a cool, dark place to protect from freezing temperatures.

How to Grow and Propagate

  1. Planting: Choose a sunny location with rich, well-draining soil. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the tuber with the “eye” facing up and cover with 2-3 in of soil.
  2. Watering: Water lightly until the plant begins to sprout, then keep soil evenly moist.
  3. Maintenance: Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Staking may be required for taller varieties.
  4. Dividing Tubers: At the end of the season, dig up the tubers, clean them, and divide them with a sharp knife. Store in a cool, dry place until ready to plant.
