A beautiful, fragrant biennial herb valued for its ornamental appeal and medicinal properties. Producing tall spikes of soft purple flowers atop sturdy stems, this plant is a stunning addition to herb gardens, pollinator patches, and naturalised landscapes. Its aromatic leaves and flowers are commonly used in herbal teas, essential oils, and traditional remedies.

This hardy herb thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, requiring regular watering during establishment but tolerating drier conditions once mature. With its strong, upright growth habit, Clary Sage adds structure to garden beds and attracts pollinators throughout its blooming season.

Where Can You Grow Clary Sage?

Clary Sage thrives in Zones 5-9, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. It grows well in herb gardens, raised beds, and dry meadow plantings. In cooler climates, it can be grown as an annual or protected over winter for a second-year bloom.

History and Historical Uses

Native to the Mediterranean and Central Asia, Clary Sage has been cultivated for centuries for its medicinal and aromatic properties. Traditionally, it was used to soothe digestion, reduce stress, and support eye health. Today, its essential oils remain a popular ingredient in aromatherapy and natural remedies.

Canadian Zone Information

Zones 8-9: Direct sow in autumn or early spring for early blooms.
Zones 5-7: Start seeds indoors in late winter or direct sow in spring after the last frost.
Zones 4: Direct sow in spring and mulch heavily in autumn to protect roots over winter.

How to Grow and Harvest Clary Sage

  1. Planting: Sow seeds 3mm (1/8in) deep, spacing plants 30-45cm (12-18in) apart.
  2. Watering: Keep soil evenly moist until plants are established, then reduce watering.
  3. Harvesting: Pick leaves and flowers as needed, best harvested in the morning for highest oil content.
  4. Maintenance: Allow plants to flower fully to attract pollinators, or deadhead to encourage bushier growth.

Seed Saving Tips for Future Supply

  1. Allow to Flower and Seed: Leave some flower spikes to fully mature and dry on the plant.
  2. Harvest Seeds: Once seed heads turn brown, cut them and place in a dry, well-ventilated area.
  3. Thresh and Clean: Gently rub seed heads to release seeds, removing any debris.
  4. Store: Store dried seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Properly stored seeds remain viable for up to 3 years.
